Functional opposition between habenula metabolism and the brain reward system

چکیده

Matsumoto and Hikosaka (2007) provided the first electrophysiological evidence that lateral habenula (LHb) neurons are inhibited by stimuli predicting reward and excited by stimuli predicting no reward, in exact opposition to the firing responses of midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons. Discovering the temporal relationship between LHb neuronal activity and negative reward prediction was groundbreaking. But for the metabolic brain-mapping field, development of a more general model of functional opposition between the LHb and the brain reward system (BRS) began with metabolic findings in the 1980s (Shumake and Gonzalez-Lima, 2003).

Negative motivational control of saccadic eye movement by the lateral habenula.

Reward is crucial for survival of animals and influences animal behaviours. For example, an approaching behaviour to reward is more frequently and quickly elicited when a big reward is expected than when a small reward is expected. Midbrain dopamine neurons are thought to be crucial for such reward-based control of motor behaviour. Indeed, dopamine neurons are excited by cues predicting reward ...

The role of the habenula in drug addiction

Interest in the habenula has greatly increased in recent years. The habenula is a small brain structure located posterior to the thalamus and adjacent to the third ventricle. Despite its small size, the habenula can be divided into medial habenula (MHb) and lateral habenula (LHb) nuclei that are anatomically and transcriptionally distinct. The habenula receives inputs from the limbic system and...

The emotive brain, the noradrenergic system, and cognition

Motivation and attention can have a profound influence on perception, learning and memory. Neuromodulatory systems, especially the noradrenergic (NE) system, co-vary with psychological states to modulate cortical arousal, influence sensory processing and promote synaptic plasticity. There is even some suggestion that the NE system might facilitate functional recovery after brain damage. Post-sy...

Commentary: New View on Treatment of Drug Dependence

In the 1960s, discovery of pleasure system (defined as reward system) in the brain that may underlie drug reward and addiction encouraged many scientists to investigate the mechanisms by which drug abuse affects central nervous system function. In this regard, investigators developed several drugs targeting the brain reward system for drug dependence therapy. However, no positive results obtain...
